Devon Winter School Games

On Thursday 17th March teams from all over Devon descended on Torbay Leisure Centre to take part in the Level 3 Devon Winter School Games.
The Devon School Games programme is supported by Sport England Lottery funding and aims to inspire young people to participate in competitive sport and provide a long term legacy as a result of the London 2012 Olympics to enable every school and child to participate in competitive sport.
All areas of Devon were represented in a day which involved competitions in 9 different sports. In order to qualify for the event teams had to have come in the top 2 in the previous local level 2 competitions. St Cuthbert Mayne therefore had teams representing Torbay in the Volleyball, Hand ball and Table Tennis events.
After a tough days competition the year 7/8 girls Volleyball team made it through to the semi-finals where they faced a very competent North Devon team. After full time the scores were tied therefore an extra point was played to establish the winners with STCM prevailing to reach the final!
The final was against Coombeshead School who had already beaten us twice in the group stages. After a really solid performance from both teams, once again the scores were level at full time and an extra point was played to see who would be titled County Champions. A fantastic return volley by Jess Macdonald off the Coombeshead serve proved too strong for the opposition to send back and victory was sealed! Congratulations to all 4 girls in the team -Jess Mac Donald, Rianna Lavis, Ebony Smith and Maria Jankowska- who can now call themselves the best in Devon!
The year 8 boys Handball team also put in a sterling performance narrowly losing to Colyton Grammar from East Devon in the semi-final but going on to win their playoff game comprehensively beating Churston 5-1. This gave them the Bronze medals in a in a well deserved 3rd place.
In addition to competing, STCM were also represented in an officiating capacity with five of the year 10 girls umpiring the High 5 Netball finals. All participants thoroughly enjoyed the day and excelled themselves in both performance and conduct. Well done!
