Message from Head of Sixth Form

Our Sixth Form is one of the smaller Sixth Form providers in Torbay and this helps us to create a friendly, caring community where you are challenged. We offer level 2 (BTEC and GCSE) and level 3 (A level and BTEC) courses in Sixth Form. You will find classes here lively and engaging but tough because you don’t want to be wasting your time. There is a good student:teacher ratio here so teachers get to know how best to help the individual student; it is important that everyone is stretched and we make it a priority that students get helpful feedback with work. Our results are very good. Many of our A level and BTEC subjects are ranked in the top 25% of the country for the progress that students make from GCSE to A level /BTEC. We know Sixth Form is a significant step-up from GCSE so we invest in our tutor system so that each student sees their tutor every day. This gives us further time to find out how you are getting on. It is also a time for you to raise any concerns, develop good study habits and to support your peers. We run a successful system for Academic Monitoring every half term to give each student time to reflect on progress made over the half term and to give some thought to what to aim for next.

There is a real energy around our Sixth Form. Our students work hard but they are also busy outside of the classroom pursuing sport, music, media, art and charity work. This is all part of the Sixth Form experience and a time to mature and to grow in confidence. Many students will be clear on plans for after Sixth Form while others are keeping options open but all need to be ready to go into the competitive job market. We support with finding work experience where it is appropriate to the individual. Each year over half chose to go on to university and further study at the same time as many chose to go to straight into employment; all get attentive career guidance to help them with this big decision.

Sixth Form is such an important decision because in your last two years of compulsory education you want to take the final step into adulthood with confidence. If you would like to speak to anyone further please contact the Sixth Form and we will do all we can to help. We look forward to hearing from you.
